Low Idle Problems/Stalling

Looking for some opinions on this one, I think its carb related (maybe my main is loose) or the valves need to be adjusted since I have close to 10-15 hours on it already.

New rebuild done approx 10-15hrs ago: 2004, 12:1, hotcam 2. Ported, +1 ex valves, new valves all the way around and springs. Running a dasa ring with 06+ uni filter and open airbox, carb is 190 main, 50 pilot and 2.5 turns out as well as HRC needle 3rd clip. I just did the air filter, before it had stock sized uni with same jetting.

Was riding fine all day, then hit a VERY bad section of whoops but I was flying over them. Got tired and slowed down and then noticed the bike didnt want to run unless I had throttle and was sputtering. Let off throttle and it shut down and took a bit to start up.

Later climbing a hill at the top I let off a good bit when i crested and it sputtered and died. At this point I raised the idle slightly from about 1100 (have a tach) which was fine before to 1400 (stock says 1600 but DANG thats high!).

Issue seemed to be better, but then was flying down a road topped in 4th and downshifted to 2nd and engine braked and bike shut down? Grabbed clutch and kept rolling them bingo it pop started with ease.

I havent taken it apart yet, no coolant leaking or boiling or missing so that rules out things like head gaskets and such. IDK? Stator would make me think it would be ok higher rpm or lights would flicker bad idling but they dont. Seems strange...

Sounds like a carb. Doing any popping or sounds like its running lean?

Nah no popping of the sort, doubt its lean but wont know till I yank it apart. I know its no uncommon either to need to do a valve adjustment when you get a few hours on all new stuff.

Could be the valves - but the issue being sporadic doesn't seem to make sense to me.

I could be wrong - but this almost sounds like a float related problem to me? Maybe the float needle in the carb is bad or sticking? What kind of fuel are you running? Anything that could have gummed up the float, float needle, or pilot jet?

Just plain jane 94 octane. Course it had been sitting for about a month since I last was out. Fuel was off but I didnt drain the bowl and I rode it around my yard a few times for only a few mins at best. I have an entire 04-05 carb for parts I can try swapping some stuff out if anything looks bad. Maybe float/float needle is sticking? Ill totally clean it out and check the valves anyways.

Thanks Gary

Think I found the issue, still gotta check the valves tho.

1. Hotstart cable, totally stretched and was being held open a bit. Replaced that.Possibly lean Im willing to bet was an issue with this.
2. Was slightly lean per the plug, went from 190 to 195.

Off to check the valves..

True, but with the larger air filter I felt it was needed. I was running the 190 with the stock sized filter and the 06 filter is WAY bigger. Either way if it gives me issues ill change it.

Still baffles me as to why I was climbing a hill and it shut off when I let off most of the throttle at the top and when I downshifted 2 gears quickly to engine brake it died.

Valves are good. Intakes slightly tight at .005 but still close enough to spec. Exhaust are good. Just the hot start I think being stuck open.

kinda sounds like what mine was doing when I had my motor all done up. Turned out I was too rich on the pilot and it was flooding the engine on idle.

either way I think you are on the right track looking at the carb.

Does it run better when cold but then crappy once hot? is there much difference when you pull the choke or hot start qhen idling?

Change that cable first thing then go from there I guess.

Doubt I'm too rich on idle or my main. Same pilot as before n only upped the main slightly. I think the hot start was stuck open n leaning everything out. But we're gonna see what happens next ride.

Doesn't seem to run better or worse with choke. Starts 1-2 kickS either way n

I hope so. Going riding tomorrow.

Think it was just the hotstart stuck open. Had zero issues today, 195 main seemed fine too.

Trust me its lean with a 190 based on the plug. I might dyno it later on but I doubt it's to rich. My 400 all done up ran a 175 stock carb

Wanted to add, that Im not some idiot who doesnt know how to jet stuff or work on this sorta thing. But others opinions are nice to have sometimes.

Im happy to report I rode all day sunday with zero issues. Pulled hard and didnt shut down at all.
